Billy在咖啡廳遇到外國同事，問起一個行銷專案，因為有一陣子沒聽到外國同事談案子近況，Billy問他怎麼了。外國同事說：The project has been put on ice until further notice.
On ice在冰上？那個行銷案子和冰有關嗎？原來，這裡的ice和冰一點關係都沒有，今天來看看ice的用法。
1.The project has been put on ice until further notice.
（Ｘ）案子在冰上，還在等通知。
（Ｏ）案子暫緩了，還在等通知。
Put on ice是「推遲一件事、擱置著」，是暫時中止，而不是永久停止。這個片語經常用來指事情暫時擱置，等待更適合的時機或條件才做。例如 :
The deal was put on ice for three months.
（這筆交易暫緩了3個月。）
有時會搭配be動詞，用be on ice：
Both projects are on ice until the question of funding is resolved.
（在資金問題解決以前，兩個專案都擱置了。）
2.It cut no ice with me.
（Ｘ）我不會切冰塊。
（Ｏ）這對我沒影響。
Cut ice字面意思是「切冰塊，砍冰塊」，冰塊很硬、刀子很難砍斷，因此cut ice引申為「有影響，起作用」。如果是有對象、對某人起作用，可以用with這個字，cut ice with sb。這個片語更常加no，表達否定的意思，也就是cut no ice with someone。
I've heard her excuses and they cut no ice with me.
（我聽了她的藉口，它們對我不管用。）
Your apologies will cut no ice with them.
（你道歉也沒有用。）
3.This is the icing on the cake.
（Ｘ）蛋糕結冰了。
（Ｏ）這真是錦上添花。
Cake是蛋糕，icing是ice的ing形式，意思就不是冰了，而是「糖霜」，經常用來指甜點、蛋糕上裝飾的東西。當我們說一件事情是icing on the cake，指的是就像蛋糕上加了糖霜，好上加好，類似中文的「錦上添花」。
Not only was I offered a higher salary, but the additional bonus I got was the icing on the cake.
（我不僅得到了更高的薪水，得到的額外獎金更是錦上添花。）
一如中文的錦上添花，icing on the cake也未必完全是稱讚，需要看上下文來判斷語氣，例如：
I love my job and getting public recognition is merely the icing on the cake.
（我喜歡我的工作，受到大家肯定也只是錦上添花。）
這句話主要意思是，受到大家認可很好，但更在意的是喜歡這份工作。
